Instructions

CONTEXT:
When we browse on the Internet, online services, websites, etc. create profiles of what may be interesting for us based on our activity. This information is later exploited for personalisation purposes such as: (i) recommending us products that may be aligned to our interests, (ii) recommend us content that may be aligned to our interests, (iii) show us tailored ads that may be aligned to our interests, etc. The interests that online services assigns to our profiles may be more or less sensitive.
In this experiment we will be showing interests that have been assigned to real users on the Internet and we are asking you to classify them as sensitive or non-sensitive for you. Below, you will find detailed instructions on how to proceed to classify an interest.
In order to help you to understand what a sensitive interest is from a legal point of view, we add here the definition of sensitive information provided by the current General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) that is enforced in all EU countries.

ARTICLE 9 EU GDPR: "Processing of special categories of personal data"

Processing of personal data revealing racial or ethnic origin, political opinions, religious or philosophical beliefs, or trade union membership, and the processing of genetic data, biometric data for the purpose of uniquely identifying a natural person, data concerning health or data concerning a natural person's sex life or sexual orientation shall be prohibited

CLASSIFICATION INSTRUCTIONS:
Before starting the pure classification task. We are asking you:
1. To answer what your Internet knowledge is.
2. To fill some demographics parameters: Gender, Age Group and Country.

Once you provide this information you have to click on the Green Start button to start the interest classification.
3. We will show you the interest in bold large letters together with the following information:
-Interest: This refers to the actual interest you have to classify.
-Disambiguation Category: This helps you to understand the actual meaning of the interest. For instance you can see Mercury as an interest. Mercury can refer to a metal or to a planet. Hence, the disambiguation category value will be either “Metal” or “Planet” depending what the interest is referring to.
-Topic: This provides some contextual information related to the interest (Lifestyle and culture, News and entertainment, people, etc) that may be useful to better know what the interest is referring to.

4. With all the information above you will be given a number of options to classify the interest:
-Non-sensitive: You need to select this option in case you consider the interest in the screen is not sensitive.
-Not Known: You need to select this option if you do not understand the meaning of the interest or you are unable to decide whether it is sensitive or non-sensitive
-In case you consider the interest is sensitive you have to select one of the 6 options provided for sensitive interests: Political, Religious, Racial, Health, Sexual or Other. You should choose Other in case you think the interest is sensitive but it does not fir in any of the 5 categories the system offers to classify sensitive interests.

5. Once you have decide the right category you just have to click on it and automatically a new interest will appear.

The more interests you classify the better for our research since we need to get thousands of interests classified. We would appreciate if you could classify at least 200 interests every time you open the classification page. We strongly appreciate your contribution, which will help to advance science and help to understand better what type of personal information should be considered as sensitive.

Use always the same device and browser when accessing this questionnaire to guarantee we can link your replies in different sessions.
